Question: You have successfully won the Mens 75+ 500m Time Trial, the 75+ 2000m Time Trial, and the 75+ Scratch race. How many times have you riden in the UCI Track Cycling World Masters Championships? Answer: It is my first time ever in the UCI Track Cycling Masters Championships, so I am new to the competition.
Question: What is your hometown in the USA? Is there a velodrome around? Answer: I come from a town from the Michigan called West Bloomfield, near Detroit. There is a velodrome nearby where I train 2 or 3 days a week.
Question: How long have you been competing in the sport of cycling? Answer: I have been competing since the age of 15, so I started 60 years ago! I stopped the competition for 46 years from 1964 to 2007. I competed for the US Olympics in Helsinki, Finland in 1952, I was 17 years old at this time and was the youngest rider in the US Olympic team. I won the 160 miles road race at the time.
Question: So how do you feel about this new World Best Time? Answer: I’m just as suprised as everybody else! 2 years ago, my coach said I could only ride with kids, and here I am with 3 new World Best Times.
Question: How much training do you get? Answer: I usually train 20 miles a day, so around 150 a week. I normally train half on the track and half on the road. You don’t need to be on the velodrome all the time.
Question: Will you travel to Lisbon, Portugal next year to again defend your titles? Answer: I think so.
Question: What are the events you are competing at these Championships? Answer: I’m competing in the 4 categories 75+, so 25 events: Sprint, 500m Time trial, 2000mTime trial, and Scratch race. I have done 3 categories so far and won all of them.
